January: a time for new beginnings. This is the time we make resolutions and decisions, some major and some minor. It is also the time when we usually break our new resolutions, often as quickly as we make them. Why is that? And, now that we’re thinking about it, how can we stand by those decisions that we know God is calling us to make? Of course, the answer lies within the question. When we make hasty resolutions just because we feel we are supposed to because of tradition’s sake, then often the choices are not well thought out. We tend to make the same worn out, trite resolutions as we always have.
Instead, what we ought to do is go to God and prayerfully ask His guidance on how we can be shaped in the New Year to look more and more like His Son. When we do so, we no longer have to depend upon our strength or our own resources to fulfill the resolutions. Since God called us to the decisions, He also will enable us to carry them out! We can daily depend upon His Holy Spirit to give us the power needed to walk by His side and fulfill our obligations.
In the New Year, let us bond together to fulfill the words of Colossians 3:12-14, Therefore, as the elect of God, holy and beloved, put on tender mercies, kindness, humility, meekness, longsuffering; 13 bearing with one another, and forgiving one another, if anyone has a complaint against another; even as Christ forgave you, so you also must do. 14 But above all these things put on love, which is the bond of perfection.
God has given First Baptist an incredible opportunity to reach this community. The way that they will see Jesus is through us, the Body of Christ. As we love Him, serve Him, and love one another and keep His commands, He says that people will know that we are His and will come to know Him. Let us joyfully put on the qualities of love, showing forgiveness in all its beauty with humility.
Love and peace to you all in 2013!
